A few summers in and the fence is looking faded, or perhaps you have noticed some warping and cracks? It is easy to ask why a fence in Phoenix will not put up with as much as one in a cooler climate. And what can be done about it?
We at Pinnacle Fencing Solutions have been putting those questions to rest for Phoenix homeowners of one sort or another since 2005. To speak with someone who has an idea of what the desert will do to a fence, give us a ring at (602)-560-8479.
The truth is the heat here is hard on fences. Between the dry air, the temperature changes and the unrelenting sun, the materials are put to the test. If one understands the mechanics of it, small issues can be nipped in the bud before they become costly.
Why Fences Don’t Last in Phoenix Weather
Fences in the Sonoran Desert are put through their paces. In summer it is not unusual to see 110 degrees or more, and what the sun is beating down on will be hotter still. Throw in the UV rays and lack of humidity and the material is bound to break down eventually.
In Phoenix these are the chief culprits:
- Unabated direct sunlight
- Exposed surfaces that run very hot
- Humidity so low it desiccates wood
- The expansion and contraction from day to day
- Wind and dust from the odd monsoon
All of this will have its effect depending on the type of fence.
Wood Fences and the Heat
Being a natural product, wood does not like the desert sun. The arid air draws the moisture right out of it, and in doing so the wood weakens and deforms.
You will see it in the form of:
- Boards that split or crack
- Edges of boards that cup or warp
- The color of the wood washing out to a gray
- A rough surface from splintering
- Nails and fasteners that come loose
When the wood is thoroughly dried out there is little to be done, but a good sealing and staining regimen will slow things down and preserve the look of the fence.
Vinyl in the Sun
Vinyl is sold as being low maintenance and for the most part it is. Yet the Phoenix sun will make itself felt. The vinyl expands with the heat and after a number of years it is apt to get brittle.
On vinyl we see:
- Some yellowing or fading
- Cracking from any impact due to brittleness
- Panels that bow or warp a bit
- Discoloration where the sun is harshest
For that reason you want to be particular about your material; quality vinyl suited to the climate will fare better.
Metal and Wrought Iron
Do not think metal is impervious to the desert. The sun will work the finish over time.
With metal fencing one might encounter:
- Paint or coatings that flake and peel
- Rust in places the coating has given way
- Powder-coating that has lost its luster
- Metal too hot to put a hand on in the daytime
Maintaining the protective coating is the only way to stave off rust and wear.
Some Protection from the Phoenix Heat
There is no need to be at the mercy of the sun. Regular care will add years to a desert fence.
It helps to:
- Put in a schedule for staining and sealing the wood
- Wash away the debris left by a monsoon
- Have a look at the hardware for rust or cracks every now and then
- Make quick work of minor repairs
- Opt for materials made for the dry heat if a replacement is in order
Should the problem be something a simple fix will not address, call in a professional accustomed to these conditions.
